Stay Aware, Stay Safe

Ransomware Attack against Law Firm

Law firms can fall victim to a ransomware attack just as any other small to medium-sized business can. Ransomware attacks — it can happen to literally anyone. If you’re not working with a Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) specialist your firm and its sensitive client data could be at risk of a ransomware attack.

Ask yourself and the partners at your law firm: How much can we afford to risk? This isn’t a question too many lawyers or law firms ask themselves, but it is a question that needs to be answered, and planned for. In the small business realm, close to 60% of all company’s stricken by a ransomware attack never recover and close its doors.

Could your law firm recover? Would your reputation suffer so badly that your clients leave your practice? Law firms need to have a BCDR plan in place and need to test it and assure yourself that if your firm was attacked by a cyber criminal that it could recover its data and continue forward.

Ask yourself these Internet security questions about your law firm:

  • What is your firm’s post-ransomware attack for recovery?
  • Does your law firm’s cybersecurity insurance policy cover the cost of being down for more than a week? Do you have insurance in place for a cyberattack?
  • Has your post-attack plan been tested this year?
  • Are you working with a BCDR specialist or are you relying on the firm’s “IT Guy” to protect the firm from a ransomware attack — but more importantly has your IT Guy put a business continuity and data recovery plan in place for the firm?

Protection against a ransomware attack is something your firm needs to work on today! Do your due diligence when hiring a BCDR professional as his or her expertise is what could be the difference between a short amount of downtime or a law firm ending shut down from which it may not recover.
